Did Ministers benefit from any FAS largesse?

November 26th, 2008

Fine Gael Enterprise Spokesman Leo Varadkar TD has questioned whether any Government Ministers benefited from FÁS largesse by having gifts or services bought for them at taxpayers’ expense.

Speaking following the resignation of Rody Molloy, Deputy Varadkar said it is still not clear who had benefited from some of the gifts or services purchased by FÁS.

“For instance, we read in the Irish Times that the person who received $410 worth of treatment in a Florida nail bar was not a FÁS executive or their spouse.

“There are a limited number of options as to who might have benefited from this facility. One is that it was a client, the second that it was a student, the third that it was a Minister travelling with a FÁS delegation.

“The first two options seem unlikely as Rody Molloy stated that this service was used as ‘preparation’ for functions. This would suggest the more likely beneficiary was a Minister.

“The question is therefore: have any Government Ministers benefited from FÁS largesse at the expense of the taxpayer?”
