Census Analysis proves urgent need for appointment Local Election Boundary Commission
 
An analysis of the 2006 Census population figures by Leo Varadkar TD (Fine Gael – Dublin West) has revealed massive discrepancies in the number of councillors representing each of the one hundred and eighty different Local Electoral Areas (LEAs) across Ireland.  Every city and county is divided into a number of LEAs which are known colloquially as ‘wards’.  The current local election boundaries were drawn up in 1999 based on the results of the 1996 census.  This means that the current local election boundaries are based on population figures that are more than ten years old.

Varadkar Welcomes Proposals to Upgrade Area Around Clonsilla Station

Fine Gael TD, Dr Leo Varadkar has given a warm welcome to plans from Fingal County Council for a major upgrade of the area around Clonsilla Station. Fingal County Council has had long-standing plans to upgrade the area around Clonsilla Station. The first footbridge has already been put in place by Iarnrod Eireann and the developers of the Hansfield area will install another footbridge at a new western access to the station to be constructed within the next two years. …[more]

Census Analysis Shows Mulhuddart is Under-Represented

Mulhuddart now has more people than Howth and Malahide combined

A statistical analysis of the 2006 Census carried out by Leo Varadkar TD shows that Mulhuddart is now the 5th most under-represented council ward in Ireland. The ward which is made up of Ongar, Clonee, Hartstown, Huntstown, Corduff, Mountview, Blakestown, Mulhuddart, Tyrrellstown, Hollystown and most of Clonsilla now has a population of 53,306. With four council seats, this means that Mulhuddart has one councillor per 13,327 people. Only Carrigaline (Co Cork), Ennis (Co Clare), Blarney (Co Cork) and Waterford No 2 (Waterford City) fare worse. …[more]
